Conclusion

Peking opera has witnessed China's many ups and downs over the past hundred years. Ma Lianliang himself lived through three tumultuous eras: the end of the Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China, and the beginning of the People's Republic of China. He spent more than half a century on the opera stage and although his art was firmly rooted in Chinese traditions, he was never afraid of looking to the past in order to innovate. As he said, "Without inheritance, performing art has no foundation, and without creation, it cannot develop." Those words remain true today, where the art of Peking opera can only be sustained and inherited through development and renewal.
