Porcelain Wares from Imperial Kiln in Kangxi Period of Qing Dynasty

Porcelain with Color Painting

The color painting on porcelain includes overglaze painting, underglaze painting, and both, that is, doucai. In this part, we focus on the porcelain with overglaze painting and doucai respectively. Overglaze, as the name suggests, means the paints are on the top of the glaze. Workers firstly burned the porcelain with glaze, and then burned it again at a relatively low temperature after painted with color images. The overglaze porcelains in Kangxi period had a great progress and development.

A large number of master pieces with color painting were produced in the Jingdezhen imperial kiln, including the types copied from Ming Dynasty, such as doucai, famille verte and plain sancai, and the new types, such as famille rose and overglaze enamel. The strong and vibrant colors of the porcelain wares in Kangxi period impress the people and show the fashion and aesthetic sense of that time.
