Exploring Beijing’s City Walls and Moats in History

Epilogue

The grand city wall and moat not only is a general circle of wall and river, but also represents a culture, which is essential to Chinese history. To Beijing, a city with a history of more than 3,000 years, the development of its city wall and moat, like a book, tells us dramatic stories.

The location, layout, construction and functions of ancient Beijing city show the wisdom and courage of Chinese ancestors. Beijing’s city walls and moats during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties (A.D. 1271–1911) were especially the models with both practical and aesthetic features among Chinese ancient cities. Most of Beijing’s city walls and moats have been already disappeared, but when we walk around the beautiful city, we can still feel the rich cultural atmosphere of an ancient city. It must be the charm of Beijing.
