Inner painted snuff bottle

The inner painted snuff bottle first appeared in the reign of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty. At first, pictures were painted on the inside of smooth, transparent snuff bottles made of crystal or glass. Later, frosting was used to make the inside white and rough like xuan paper, so that techniques of traditional Chinese painting could be fully applied. Beijing snuff bottles with drawings inside feature a wide range of subject matters and are characterized by fine workmanship and the combination of calligraphy and painting, forming what is popularly known as Beijing School.
