Carved lacquerware

Carved lacquer ware derived from court lacquerware in the Tang Dynasty. The inner tube, usually made of copper, is lacquered dozens or even a hundred times, the number depending on the type of the product. Then fine patterns are carved on the lacquer ware. The production of one carved lacquer article calls for more than a hundred steps, including making the inner tube, enameling, lacquering, drawing, carving, polishing and treating the inside. Red is the principal color, which is mellow and lustrous. (by Zhu Kai)
