Ancient and modern

Founded in 1853 (the third year of Xianfeng reign in the Qing Dynasty), Neiliansheng is famous for producing and selling traditional cloth shoes with cotton soles. The name, in which the word Nei refers to the court, implies that one who wore court boots made by the shop would enjoy a smooth official career and quick promotion. Its products are marked by exquisite workmanship. The making of a cotton soled shoes requires seven steps, and there must be more than eight-one stitches in one square cun. An old Beijing saying goes, ‘A Majuyuan hat, a pair of Neiliansheng shoes, a dress of the eight Xiangs, and a belt of the four Hengs.’ (by Zhu Kai)
